There have been a lot of questions regarding the differences between the Analog Discovery 2 and the Analog Discovery. Forum user JohnBee brought to our attention a video created by Youtube user Nezbrun, who shot a video detailing the differences in performance between the Analog Discovery and the Analog Discovery 2.
First, he goes through comparing the packaging. He notes the old case was much smaller and more compact, which he liked. The new packaging is twice the height!
He then he goes on to note that although it is twice the size, the Analog Discovery 2 packaging provides space to put additional tools in the box.
Next he compares the two devices physically; they seem to be about the same size. He also notes that we seem to have taken form over function. However, the sleeker and prettier Analog Discovery 2 is not just that, it’s also stronger and more durable. I personally have heard and experienced more than a few complaints of the black casing on the original Analog Discovery breaking apart and of the USB connector falling off. The Analog Discovery 2 is made of durable polycarbonate plastic and screwed together, so it should hold together much better.
I guess not everyone has a tendency to break stuff like I do!
Next he demonstrates the handy BNC adapter and shows that it can be used on both devices.
He hooks up both devices for the comparison of performance.
Below you can see a snapshot of Waveforms as he compares the two devices.
One thing he does note is that both devices appear to have a triggering problem, resulting in jagged waveforms.
However, Attila reports that the next release of Waveforms 2015 this problem is solved.
In the end he says he likes both of them and isn’t sure which one will travel next time. The Analog Discovery has traveled all over the world with him! He reports that they are both “fantastic devices.” Thanks Nezbrun!
