What is WaveForms?

WaveForms is the free software application for the Analog Discovery 2 and enables use of the available analog and digital oscilloscope instruments. The software has been refined by customer feedback for over 10 years and features a PC and laptop friendly user interface that has the feel of traditional benchtop software. The Analog Discovery 2 communicates with WaveForms via a USB connection to your computer, allowing users to capture, record, analyze, and generate mixed signal and mixed domain waveforms. WaveForms can be downloaded and installed in under 60 seconds and can be tested without hardware using its demo mode. In addition to the use of instruments in the application, the WaveForms has a script editor tool, which allows custom scripting of the instrument in JavaScript. WaveForms is designed to be run on a laptop or desktop computer and is Mac, Windows, and Linux compatible.

The following instruments are available in the WaveForms application for the Analog Discovery 2:

WaveForms Spectrum Analyzer

  • Oscilloscope
  • Waveform Generator
  • Power Supplies
  • Voltmeter
  • Data Logger
  • Logic Analyzer
  • Pattern Generator
  • Static I/O
  • Spectrum Analyzer
  • Network Analyzer
  • Impedance Analyzer
  • Curve Tracer
  • Protocol Analyzer

For even more customization potential, the WaveForms Software Development Kit (SDK) can be used to create custom applications and scripts in Python, C, and additional languages. The Analog Discovery 2 is also compatible with LabVIEW and the Digilent Toolbox for compatibility with MathWorks' MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox

    Awesome scope

Posted by Keith D. on 8th Feb 2018

For a $300 product, this oscilloscope is amazing. High quality, and packed with features. The software is easy to install, stable, very few bugs, and Mac friendly. The documentation is excellent, which is a real rarity these days. If I had to complain about something I would say that the method of connecting scope probes is a bit awkward and could be improved. Also, there are so many features it will take me forever to learn to use them all. I wish they would add another higher-end model to the product mix with a faster sampling rate, bigger buffer, and better noise isolation.

Good practical value, but needs upgrade

Posted by Robert Crane on 18th Dec 2017

The physical package needs some additional upgrades: USB must be isolated, because the circuit has differential inputs, the BNC adapter board must be upgraded to allow this option to be physically selected. The whole package must be re-intergrated into a more USB scope like package. Consideration should be given to higher frequency bandwidth models, for both oscope input and function generator output. And also models with 4 scope channels and 2 to 4 awg channels might be considered, in a more professionally toughened package. Consideration should be made for flexibly operating more than one unit, in either USB or Ethernet connection. Other possibilities are whether this unit can be connected to Raspberry or other linux embedded systems for multiple unit integrated control. Otherwise, I consider this tool as best of breed, functions and software, and kudos for the analog circuit analysis tools, which for my requirements, only your tool, at this price point provides.

Truly an Amazing Value. Just One Thing...

Posted by Paul Ierymenko on 26th Oct 2017

This is the first PC digitizer I've found with really good software that turns it into a truly useful collection of instruments for circuit verification. Just one thing: To really unlock the power of this tool, Digilent needs to give us a screen where both the analog scope traces AND the logic analyzer traces can be vertically time-aligned and share a common cursor, etc. This would really put the icing on the cake. Great and useful as it is, but this one feature is lacking and limits its usefulness in mixed signal applications.

AD2 is Great, Getting Started Material, Not so much

Posted by Tim Miner on 10th Oct 2017

Seriously, I like the hardware. So far I have figured out the scope and AWG and the dual DC supply. Figuring out the pattern generator may be easy for someone who has used a logic analyzer or some other pattern generator. The documentation needs a step by step example. The example I found so far explains controls in such deep detail that you can not follow the example project itself.

    Great Tool

Posted by [email protected] on 21st Sep 2017

Purchased this tool for analog work. I have a DSO that works well but I have limited bench space for spectrum analyzer and signal generator. This piece so is well for both and takes very little room. The oscope works well too and the software for it is well done. Highly recommended

    great little package

Posted by John K on 16th Sep 2017

No surprises... software installed and runs with no glitches.. works as advertised... out performs some of my old vacuum tube based test equipment that has developed hum problems. I now have lots of room on my test bench. Lots of fun for this retired technician.

    Very capable peice of equipment

Posted by Digilent Customer on 31st Aug 2017

Choice was between a low cost standalone 2ch oscilloscope or the Digilent Discovery 2. The Digilent Discovery 2 has impressed me so far with great software which worked right out of the box in Linux (Ubuntu) and the software appears very stable too. The additional features such as logic analyser and protocol analyser will also prove very useful and are not available on the low cost scopes. Great investment and would highly recommend.

Incredible value. Brilliant piece of gear.

Posted by Dallas on 29th Jun 2017

Much better than any of the more expensive similar products I've used. Lots of great features and just works. I sent this to a client having never used it before and was able to run it remote from halfway across the country and solve a significant technical issue that required use of an oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and protocol analyzer. Did it all with this device with only the initial set of connections. Great piece of gear.
