Digital Logic

At Digilent, our mission is to empower students and educators in digital logic education by providing industry-grade tools and resources tailored for academic environments. Our FPGA boards, like the Basys 3 and Nexys A7, are specifically designed to help students grasp digital logic concepts through hands-on experience. These platforms feature integrated switches, LEDs, and programmable I/O, enabling students to design, test, and implement digital circuits in real time.

By supporting industry-standard languages like VHDL and Verilog, and integrating seamlessly with AMD’s Vivado software, our tools make complex digital design accessible to learners at all levels. We offer comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and ready-made lab materials, ensuring that educators can focus on teaching rather than content creation.

Our boards are cost-effective and built to withstand the rigors of classroom use, making them ideal for both individual learning and large academic programs. Through our platforms, students can easily explore combinational and sequential logic, state machines, and more, applying theory to real-world scenarios. We take pride in equipping students with the skills they need to excel in digital logic design, whether they’re taking their first course or working on advanced embedded systems projects.

The Basys 3 is a complete and ready-to use digital circuit development platform, it includes enough switches, LEDs, and other I/O devices to allow a large number of designs to be completed without the need for any additional hardware. There are also enough uncommitted FPGA I/O pins to allow designs to be expanded using Digilent Pmods or other custom boards and circuits, and all of this at a student-friendly price point.

Students can start learning right away with the Nexys A7 thanks to its versatile selection of interfaces, such as 10/100 Ethernet, USB, UART, JTAG, and VGA. With a built-in temperature sensor, microphone, and accelerometer, students can work on a variety of projects without needing any additional hardware. Of course, 5 Pmod ports are available for additional customizability and applications.

Curriculum Integration and Educational Resources

Designing digital systems with FPGAs can be rewarding and powerful for implementing custom designs in prototyping and educational use. However, due to the complex nature of the topic, it can at times be an intimidating learning process. While it can sometimes be tricky to locate and select introductory resources for getting started with the hardware outside of an academic setting, our list of Digital Projects is a great place to start.
