The JTAG-HS3 is an affordable high-speed Xilinx® FPGA programming solution. The HS3 builds on the successful JTAG-HS1 by adding an open-drain buffer to pin 14 allowing for the debugging of Xilinx Zynq-SOC processors. It can be attached to target boards using Xilinx's 2x7 connector*, and is compatible with all Xilinx tools, including iMPACT™, ChipScope™, and EDK.

When connected to a PC via a standard A to micro-USB cable, the JTAG HS3 receives its power from USB and can be recognized as a Digilent programming cable, even if the HS3 is not attached to the target board. The JTAG bus can be shared with other devices as the HS3's signals are held in high-impedance, except when actively driven during programming. The HS3 is small and light, allowing it to be held firmly in place by the system board connector.

This is a unique programming header and is not compatible with the 1x6 MTE Digilent JTAG Connector.

Note: This cable is not needed for Digilent FPGA boards as our boards are designed with integrated programming circuitry.

    JTAG-HS3

Posted by Pete on 30th Sep 2021

The Digilent JTAG-HS3 works as well or better than the more expensive USB debug cable from Xilinx. I consider debug cables to be consumables so I like to have several laying around. Eventually they get damaged or wear out. I have one negative story though. Recently I was using FT_PROG and I accidentally erased the eprom on the HS3 that configures the FTDI chip on the module. I had saved the previous contents and tried to restore it but Vivado would not recognize it. The Digilent support rep sent me an exe file to restore the HS3 but that did not work either. Finally, I just bought two more HS3. They are cheap enough.

    More Trouble Than its worth

Posted by Digilent Customer on 17th Jun 2020

Doesn't work with Windows 10. Applied all the fixes that were recommended and still not recognized by Xilinx SDK. Lost many hours and days on this. Never again.

    Excellent low cost option

Posted by Jim Watts on 27th Jul 2018

No issues programming Zunq FPGA or debugging my ‘C’ code in SDK. The only restriction has to do with no flexible ribbon cable to connect to FPGA board. A simple adapter cable should overcome...

It works for me after I fix the heat shrink

Posted by Mark Nielson on 4th Jun 2018

I recently have bought 3 of these cables to enable the JTAG programming for a graduate project at BYU. Our platform is the microzed by avnet. The standard jtag port on the microzed didn't fit using this cable because in all three causes the heat shrink was placed incorrectly and had to be cut a bit just so I could use the cable. I admit it was disappointing considering that this cable is overpriced in the first place.

Works perfectly, but no pitch adapters

Posted by V Mehta on 1st Sep 2017

This is so much less expensive than the Xilinx platform cables, and I appreciate that. It only supports the 2mm pitch 2x7 JTAG connector, and doesn't include any adapters in the box. In this key way it is different from the Xilinx cable, which includes many adapters. Unfortunately adapters are not available anywhere, and Xilinx has no recommendations on what to do. Make sure you check your setup, and prepare before you buy!

    Works Great, Low Cost

Posted by Matt Longmire on 11th Nov 2016

I bought this to use with a PicoZed board and Carrier Card and it works great. It's a fraction of the cost of the Xilinx Platform Cable II USB. Gotta love it!
