What is the Analog Discovery 2?

If you're wondering where to buy an oscilloscope or how to buy an oscilloscope, you've come to the right place. Digilent Analog Discovery 2 is a USB oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and multi-function instrument that allows users to measure, visualize, generate, record, and control mixed-signal circuits of all kinds. Despite our competitive oscilloscope price, we never compromise on quality. Developed in conjunction with Analog Devices and supported by Xilinx University Program, this compact oscilloscope is small enough to be a pocket oscilloscope, but powerful enough to replace a stack of lab oscilloscopes and equipment, providing engineering professionals, students, hobbyists, and electronic enthusiasts the freedom to work with analog and digital circuits in virtually any environment, in or out of the lab. The analog and digital inputs and outputs can be connected to a circuit using simple wire probes; alternatively, the Analog Discovery BNC Adapter and BNC probes can be used to connect and utilize the inputs and outputs.

Driven by the free WaveForms software (Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible), this small oscilloscope can be configured to work as any one of several traditional test and measurement instruments including an Oscilloscope, Waveform Generator, Power Supply, Voltmeter, Data Logger, Logic Analyzer, Pattern Generator, Static I/O, Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, Impedance Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, and Curve Tracer.

    I love it

Posted by Stanislav on 6th Jun 2023

I have been using AD since the first version, and I haven't encountered anything better so far. Since I move about quite a bit, the size is a huge matter. And the point, that in such a tiny box you have a 14-bit (!!) scope and a versatile logic analyzer keeps me amazed even after all these years. In PC scopes, apart from hardware, the software part is really important. I remember one Russian scope that had a very decently designed hardware, but the software was so terribly made, that it virtually rendered the device unusable. Here, in AD the software is really really good. All the necessary tools, all the necessary measurements, and in terms of Logic - various protocol decoding: everything is right there! So you can literally look at what exactly, say, your accelerometer module, or DSP module is sending back to the MCU and quickly catch bugs, should need be. So, I am a happy and proud user. Than you guys!!

    Ease of operation

Posted by Jaye on 18th Apr 2023

With a modest amount of effort, the Analog discovery 2 setup and operation becomes quite intuitive. It is especially easy to use as a logic Analyzer with, for instance, i2C decoding. The Oscilloscope has sufficient speed for all of my Digital-Audio development applications. The Analog Discovery 2 is well thought out and dependable. The developers have reason to be proud of this product. Jaye Waas Senior Scientist

    Plug and play

Posted by Jack on 29th Apr 2020

Very nice 2-channel scope and waveform generator. Very nice software and fast data transfer compared to any of my Rigols. No messy difficulties setting it up, even on Linux! Two features I miss: 1. Real-time lock-in amplifier, i.e., the ability to stream continuous demodulated data. This requires the demodulation and filtering to happen on the FPGA, though, so perhaps it's difficult to implement with this hardware. 2. Clock ins and outs. If we could sync multiple AD2's, it would be SUPER powerful. Still, can't go wrong for a few hundred bucks!!

    Seems good so far

Posted by Digilent Customer on 28th Jan 2020

I used this last year as a rental for school and it was always pretty straight forward and simple to use. Great for doing stuff at home. I bought one this year for myself and it works great so far. I haven’t tried to do anything to fancy yet and I know it has limitations, but it works for what I need it to do.

    Great Instrument

Posted by J. Kretzschmar on 18th Dec 2019

Our university recently designed home-based labs for two online electrical engineering courses incorporating the Analog Discovery 2 in the lab kits to be provided to the students. Experience with the AD2 throughout the development of the labs has been great. We did not use all of the features, however, what we did use worked out perfectly for the purposes of the courses (+/- 5 volt power supply, oscilloscope, waveform generator, and logic analyzer). Because of the availability of the AD2 we are now able to offer a select number of courses with labs online at our university. This is a wonderful instrument for a student, or hobbyist.

    Two thumbs up!

Posted by Digilent Customer on 15th Nov 2019

I recently purchased an Analog Discovery2, as well as the Analog Parts Kit, and have been blazing my way through the Real Analog lessons found on this site (https://learn.digilentinc.com/classroom/realanalog/). Fun! The course is really outstanding, especially the included video lectures. Thank you Digilent! The Analog Discovery2 seems well made, and so far, works as intended, but admittedly, I have not yet tried all the features. Installing the Waveform software on my mac was simple.
