What is the Analog Discovery 2?

If you're wondering where to buy an oscilloscope or how to buy an oscilloscope, you've come to the right place. Digilent Analog Discovery 2 is a USB oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and multi-function instrument that allows users to measure, visualize, generate, record, and control mixed-signal circuits of all kinds. Despite our competitive oscilloscope price, we never compromise on quality. Developed in conjunction with Analog Devices and supported by AMD University Program, this compact oscilloscope is small enough to be a pocket oscilloscope, but powerful enough to replace a stack of lab oscilloscopes and equipment, providing engineering professionals, students, hobbyists, and electronic enthusiasts the freedom to work with analog and digital circuits in virtually any environment, in or out of the lab. The analog and digital inputs and outputs can be connected to a circuit using simple wire probes; alternatively, the Analog Discovery BNC Adapter and BNC probes can be used to connect and utilize the inputs and outputs.

Driven by the free WaveForms software (Mac, Linux, and Windows compatible), this small oscilloscope can be configured to work as any one of several traditional test and measurement instruments including an Oscilloscope, Waveform Generator, Power Supply, Voltmeter, Data Logger, Logic Analyzer, Pattern Generator, Static I/O, Spectrum Analyzer, Network Analyzer, Impedance Analyzer, Protocol Analyzer, and Curve Tracer.

When you buy an oscilloscope from Digilent, you can be confident that you're getting an excellent product from a trusted brand. We're committed to providing our customers with the best possible experience, whether you're a student just starting out or a seasoned professional. We also offer the best oscilloscope price on the market for verified academic accounts, so if you're looking to reduce the oscilloscope cost, head over to our academic verification page for more information. If you're an international customer, we have a network of authorized oscilloscope distributors that may have better shipping options. To find an oscilloscope distributor near you, you can select the distributor button above or visit our Affiliations page.

USB Oscilloscope

Analog Discovery 2 among compatible add-on boardsThe Analog Discovery 2 oscilloscope is designed to be a portable alternative to a stack of benchtop equipment. It's durable enclosure measures (3.23 inch x 3.25 inch x7/8 inch) and fits in a pocket. The Digilent Discovery 2 can be connected to circuits and designs via the included female flywires, or used in conjunction with the included gender changers when a male connection is necessary.

Accessories can be purchased separately to provide additional functionality, such as the BNC Adapter for higher bandwidth and BNC connectors, or the Breadboard Adapter and Breadboard Breakout for a direct connection to the breadboard, or the Impedance Analyzer for additional Impedance measurement functionality. The Analog Discovery 2 comes packaged in a durable project box that will fit all the included accessories and some additional adapter boards. The project box measures (7" x 5.75" x 1.5") and provides even more durability when stashing your portable Oscilloscope and multi-function instrument in your backpack or briefcase.

For improved Power Supplies, integrated BNC connectors and a replaceable breadboardable interface, check out the Analog Discovery Studio.

What is WaveForms?

WaveForms is the free software application for the Analog Discovery 2 and enables use of the available analog and digital instruments. The software has been refined by customer feedback for over 10 years and features a computer and laptop friendly user interface that has the feel of traditional benchtop software. The Analog Discovery 2 communicates with WaveForms via a USB connection to your computer, allowing users to capture, record, analyze, and generate mixed signal and mixed domain waveforms. WaveForms can be downloaded and installed in under 60 seconds and can be tested without hardware using its demo mode feature. In addition to the use of instruments in the application, the WaveForms application has a script editor tool, which allows custom scripting of the instrument in JavaScript. WaveForms is designed to be run on a laptop or desktop computer and is Mac, Windows, and Linux compatible.

The following instruments are available in the WaveForms application for the Analog Discovery 2:

WaveForms Spectrum Analyzer

  • Oscilloscope
  • Waveform Generator
  • Power Supplies
  • Voltmeter
  • Data Logger
  • Logic Analyzer
  • Pattern Generator
  • Static I/O
  • Spectrum Analyzer
  • Network Analyzer
  • Impedance Analyzer
  • Curve Tracer
  • Protocol Analyzer

For even more customization potential, the WaveForms Software Development Kit (SDK) can be used to create custom applications and scripts in Python, C, and additional languages. The Analog Discovery 2 is also compatible with LabVIEW and the Digilent Toolbox for compatibility with MathWorks' MATLAB Data Acquisition Toolbox

    A Well Kept Secret...

Posted by Steve Coppens on 21st Aug 2016

I would have bought the AD2 a long time ago if I had known about it! An excellent box of tricks that works very well, but it is the software that really shines (and on Mac too...). Faultless attention to detail - much appreciated tool!

Hard to believe that you can get a whole test lab in such a small box

Posted by Robert at USC on 20th Jun 2016

This is an amazing value, and an essential tool for every electronics hobbyist and student. Even for seasoned electronics engineers, this would be a great addition to their toolbox. At low frequency (up to about 30 MHz), it basically gives you an entire suite of test equipment that fits in your backpack. It's hard to believe that this is being offered for at such low cost. My wishlist for Discovery 3 is being able to use multiple units at once to increase the number of channels, as well as current monitoring capability on the supply voltages. Other than that however, it's grand! Please check this product out. DISCLAIMER: I am in no way connected to Digilent, but I love this product!

    Amazing!

Posted by Bobby Goodson on 1st Jun 2016

This device is a fantastic tool. I am taking a cicuits class, and this has been an extremely helpful and versatile tool. the price of equipment to perform all the same functions would be enormous, having this available is a godsend.

    Analog2 Discovery

Posted by Francois Corthay on 21st Apr 2016

There are several USB oscilloscopes around. This one has a great user interface. I wanted one with X-Y display and it fitted that need. The small form factor and the supply through USB allows to use it in the field with a laptop.

    Analog Discovery Review

Posted by Jeffrey Wedekind on 20th Apr 2016

The Analog Discoveries (I have them both) are great tools. I have tested and used many USB based tools and found anything written in C# is simply junk (Qt /C++ was a great choice). My test is so simple, log a voltage over night and see if the software still runs in the morning. Most tools are dead after a few hours or the dreaded hour glass / lockup / reboot. I have run Waveforms for days / weeks and I've never seen a crash. The engineers that wrote Waveforms software are amazing and I write embedded software for a living. Primarily I use the Analog Discovery with a current sense circuit for monitoring Bluetooth Low Energy current profiles as a low cost DC Analyzer. The Logic Analyzer is great also but I tend to use the Saleae Logic since I'm so used to it. All-in-all it is a great tool for the price.
