The Cmod, or Carrier Module, family of products is designed to offer quick, simple, and flexible integration of an FPGA into circuit design, prototyping, and learning/hobby projects.

The Digilent Cmod A7 is a small, 48-pin DIP form factor board built around a AMD® Artix®-7 FPGA that brings FPGA power and prototyping to a solderless breadboard.

The board includes a Quad-SPI flash for programming, as well as a USB-JTAG programming circuit and USB-UART bridge. The Cmod A7 also features a clock source, Pmod port, and onboard I/O with LEDs and pushbuttons. There are 44 FPGA I/O signals that are routed to 100-mil-spaced through-hole pins, making the Cmod A7 compatible with solderless breadboards. This form factor makes the Cmod A7 a great option for flexible and affordable prototyping, or learning FPGA and digital logic circuits. At just .7" by 2.75", it can also be loaded in a standard socket and used in embedded systems.

The Artix®-7 FPGA on the Cmod A7 provides the highest performance-per-watt fabric, transceiver line rates, DSP processing, and AMS integration for a cost-optimized FPGA. With the MicroBlaze Soft Processor Core from AMD, you can create embedded applications with a variety of peripherals, memory, and interfaces.

If your design does not require the transceiver lines or higher-performance of the Artix®-7 FPGA, we recommend the more affordable Cmod S7, featuring a Spartan®-7 FPGA.

Guides and demos are available to help users get started quickly with the Cmod A7. These can be found through the Support Materials tab.

If you are using the MicroBlaze Soft Processor Core from AMD, you can make use of the Vitis Core Development Kit or AMD Software Development Kit to create embedded applications for your Cmod A7.

Note: AMD software tools are not available for download in some countries. Prior to purchasing the Cmod A7, please check the supporting software's availability, as it is required for the board's use.

Very good product with plenty of I/O

Posted by Igor Gaponenko on 12th Jan 2026

I purchased A7 to experiment with driving various peripheral devices (SPI, etc.). A7 has plenty of I/O ports for that. My overall experience with the FPGA module was quite positive. The main inconvenience that I ran into was the prolonged simulation & elaboration time of Vivado on Windows 10/11. The compilation time of my designs was getting up to and beyond 10 minutes for relatively simple projects. This is not very convenient for the iterative development model, especially if you're still learning about FPGAs. I haven't tried to run Vivado on Linux. The slowness of the tools is definitely not a problem with Digilent. I just wanted to mention it here. If someone is looking for alternatives, then you may also consider the Gowin-based Sipeed Tang Nano 20K, which has a comparable amount of onboard resources. Unlike Vivado, Gowin's EDA tools are an order of magnitude faster. The downside of the Tang Nano 20K is the small number of I/O ports compared with A7.

    Great Utility

Posted by Dennis on 5th Jan 2026

This is a work-horse for learning/teaching FPGAs. Two things I would change: 1. I wish the 12 pin PMOD was a right-angle pin header. 2. I wish it used the slightly larger type-B MIN, the provided USB connector is fragile,

Great deal for FPGAs. Small form-factor and good price for a strong chip.

    CMOD A7-35T and BusBridge3 Project

Posted by Steve Purcell on 29th Jun 2023

I'm very impressed with this board and the BusBridge3 project designed for it. The BusBridge project is a wealth of information and useable code that I've only just begun to delve into and will provide value for years to come working with FTDI chips and Xilinx FPGA's. The board shipped in three days and the projects upgraded to the newest Visual Studio and Vivado and built and ran flawlessly without any modifications. For what I was looking for this product provides value far beyond it's price.

    Small but powerful

Posted by Mathias on 16th Jan 2022

This is a very nice little board. I like it very much. Bear in mind that the SRAM only has a 8 bit bus. Also the pmod connector does have 4 differential pairs, but you can only use 3, since one of the pairs is not in the same group.

    Amazing little board!

Posted by Marcus on 14th Dec 2021

This has become my favorite FPGA board by far. I have a RiscV32 in it, plenty of RAM and ROM, and any peripheral I need. I use it for projects and to test devices at work. Fits breadboards for easy wiring.

good price for a powerful tiny FPGA board. Will be nice if the board comes without the PMOD connector.
