The Basys 2 is no longer in production. Once the current stock is depleted, it will be discontinued. The Basys 2 is currently only supported in ISE; however, for new courses we recommend that you move directly to Vivado and the Basys 3.

The Basys 2 FPGA development board is a circuit design and implementation platform for beginners to gain experience building real digital circuits. Built around a Xilinx® Spartan®-3E FPGA and an Atmel® AT90USB2 USB controller, the Basys 2 development board provides complete, ready-to-use hardware suitable for hosting circuits ranging from basic logic devices to complex controllers. A large collection of on-board I/O devices and all required FPGA support circuits are included, so countless designs can be created without the need for any other components.

Four standard expansion connectors allow designs to grow beyond the Basys 2 board using breadboards, user-designed circuit boards, or Pmods (Pmods are inexpensive analog and digital I/O modules that offer A/D & D/A conversion, motor drivers, sensor inputs, and many other features). Signals on the 6-pin connectors are protected against ESD damage and short-circuits, ensuring a long operating life in any environment.

Works fine for me on Win 10 with ISE 14.7

Posted by Phil on 22nd Mar 2021

Needed ISE rather than Vivado for my course, had doubts this would work on Win 10 but with the help of Adept software it's programming fine. Basys 3 is the way to go, but if you need to stick with ISE you'll probably be happy with the Basys 2.

    ISE 14.7 doesn't support BASYS2

Posted by Thomas McLaughlin on 19th Jul 2019

I found a couple of BASY2 FPGA boards in my lab and tried to get them working for students in a lab. However, the information to get started is very confusing. Yikes!

Switch to Basys3, poor (aka no intuitive) Xilinx support of Windows 10 for Spartan 3

Posted by Jim Lewis on 19th Feb 2018

To use this board with Windows 10, you need to be using the non-windows 10 version of Xilinx ISE 14.7 and work around any issues. Unfortunately Digilent documentation fails to point this out. In SynthWorks VHDL classes we have had a long history with this board (and it's predecessors), but with Xilinx's failure to support Spartan 3 directly in the Windows 10 release of ISE makes the use of this board impractical. We had already switched most of our students to the Basys3 board, but allowed those who wanted to use ISE to have this board. This issue only complicates the situation. See the Basys3 board - may it have a long and great support by Xilinx tools.
