Digital Trainer Canvas Reference Manual

The Digital Trainer Canvas is a replaceable and removable prototyping surface for the Analog Discovery Studio. The bulk of the Digital Trainer Canvas consists of 2 regular sized breadboards and two power rails. At the top of the board, three small breadboards contain the access pins for the power supplies, switches, and LEDs. Sixteen switches and LEDs are integrated into the canvas. The power supply access pins can be switched ON / OFF via the power supply switch and the status is indicated by the POWER indicator LED. The Digital Trainer Canvas is used with or without the Analog Discovery Studio.

Mechanical Design

The Digital Trainer Canvas is designed to connect to the Analog Discovery Studio via standoffs. Magnets are located within each of the holes that the standoffs slot into in order to hold the Canvas in place. The Digital Trainer Canvas can be removed from the Analog Discovery Studio and swapped out with other canvases.

Warning! Do not swap out Canvases while the Analog Discovery Studio is turned on.

Breadboards

The Digital Trainer Canvas has two regular-size breadboards and two power rails mounted to the canvas surface, along with three small breadboards that contain access pins for the power supplies, switches, and LEDs.

Power Supplies

The Analog Discovery Studio provides two fixed power supply rails, +5.0 V and +3.3 V, directly to the canvas, which can be used to power circuits under test. The power access pins for the two fixed supplies are located on the smaller breadboard adjacent to the LEDs and can be controlled using the ON/OFF switch. When both the switch and the ADS are in the ON position, a green POWER LED, adjacent to the switch, indicates the status of power available on the power access pins.

The two fixed rails are summarized in the table below:

Label Voltage Maximum Current
+5.0 V 5 V ±5% 1.0 A
+3.3 V 3.3 V ±5% 1.0 A

Note: The 3.3 V and 5.0 V power supplies are only available directly from pins located on the canvas.

A jumper below the switch dictates which supply the 16 embedded switches are associated with.

Since each power supply is sourced directly from the Analog Discovery Studio, the current and power available for each supply depends on the Analog Discovery Studio's specifications. See the Analog Discovery Studio Specifications for more information.

Built-in Components

The Digital Trainer Canvas features a variety of common components which can be used within a circuit under test.

Each of the components described in this section is accessed via pins on the smaller breadboards.

User Switches

Sixteen switches are available on the Digital Trainer Canvas. When switched to the ON position (switched towards the breadboard surface), they provide a connection between the selected power rail and the corresponding access pins (SW0 - SW15) on the smaller breadboards. The voltage selector jumper is used to set the voltage level for all sixteen switches.

A circuit diagram detailing how the switches are connected to the smaller breadboards can be seen below.

User LEDs

Sixteen red light emitting diodes are available on the Digital Trainer Canvas. These LEDs can be controlled by providing power to the corresponding pins on the smaller breadboards.

A circuit diagram detailing how the LEDs are connected to the smaller breadboards can be seen below.
