Analog Discovery Studio Canvas Design Guide

Overview

One of the key features of the Analog Discovery Studio is the versatility offered by the Canvas boards. Entire designs, demonstrations, and hands-on teaching tools can be swapped in and out with ease, taking advantage of multiple voltage lines and USB data lines provided by the Analog Discovery Studio.

On board microprocessors and systems present on canvases can be configured through the provided USB data lines, accessible through the USB hub integrated into the Analog Discovery Studio, allowing for custom embedded labs that take advantage of the supplied voltage rails to measure data from different sensors. Variable voltage and dedicated +12V, -12V, +5V, +3.3V supplies and multiple ground lines are provided to support a variety of peripherals.

Power Supplies

The Analog Discovery Studio provides several voltage rails to power an attached Canvas. The following specifications are based on the power supply included with the Analog Discovery Studio.

Voltage Rail Name Voltage Range Maximum Amperage Maximum Capacitance
+12 Volt Rail +12V ±5% 0.2 A 1000 uF
-12 Volt Rail -12V ±5% 0.2 A 150 uF
+5 Volt Rail +5.0V ±5% 1.0 A 1000 uF
+3.3 Volt Rail +3.3V ±5% 1.0 A 1000 uF

The Analog Discovery Studio also provides pair of programmable power supplies that are enabled and configured through the WaveForms software.

Voltage Rail Name Voltage Range Maximum Power Output Maximum Current Output Accuracy (no load) Output Impedance
V+ 1V to 5V 2.1 W 700 mA ±10 mV 50 mΩ
V- -1V to -5V 2.1 W 700 mA ±10 mV 50 mΩ

Physical Dimensions

The Analog Discovery Studio has 10 pins (pogo pins) that are located in the top center of the landing area to provide power and data to the loaded canvas. The two sets of 5 pogo pins have a 2.54 mm (100 mil) pitch and are each 2.25 mm in diameter. A slot in each of the corners to easily allow for different Canvas boards to be magnetically secured to the Analog Discovery Studio. Digilent used 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) steel standoffs with a 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) outer diameter and a 6-32 thread. The screws used on the Canvas' to secure them to the standoffs are 6-32 x 0.250 inch (6.35 mm) machine screws.

Pogo Pinout Table

The pin arrangement of the 10 pogo pins on the Canvas arranged as follows to line up with the pins provided on the Analog Discovery Studio, with pin 1 on the left most side of the Analog Discovery Studio.

Left side Right Side
Pin Number Pin Name Pin Number Pin Name
1 +Vout User selected 6 +3.3 V Canvas
2 -Vout User selected 7 +5 V Canvas
3 Ground 8 Ground
4 +12 V VCC 9 USB Data P
5 -12 V VCC 10 USB Data N

PCB Considerations

Trace widths extending from the pogo pins provided by the Analog Discovery Studio are dependent on the custom canvas copper weight and current usage. If using the same machine screw dimensions as the ones used by Digilent, the total thickness of the canvas should not exceed 2.36 mm.
