{"id":24503,"date":"2018-05-10T10:47:28","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T17:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.digilentinc.com\/?p=24503"},"modified":"2021-06-09T14:49:22","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T21:49:22","slug":"digital-discovery-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/digital-discovery-review\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does DesignSpark Think of the Digital Discovery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we took a peek at some demo projects on DesignSpark with the Raspberry Pi and Pmod HAT Adapter, but today we are going to take a look at another awesome article from the site- <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rs-online.com\/designspark\/digilent-digital-discovery-a-logic-analyser-for-your-pc\">A first look at the Digilent Digital Discovery!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24504\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/digital-discovery-0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"379\" data-wp-pid=\"24504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/digital-discovery-0.png 428w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/digital-discovery-0-110x96.png 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this article, Karl Woodward reviews the <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/digital-discovery-portable-logic-analyzer-and-digital-pattern-generator\/\">Digital Discovery<\/a> and provides a comprehensive rundown of its uses and features. He lists the specifications and then touches briefly on the<a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/reference\/software\/waveforms\/waveforms-3\/start\"> WaveForms<\/a> software, before delving into the applications of a logic analyzer. He explains the differences between a logic analyzer and an oscilloscope, and how logic analyzers are the best choice for tasks like decoding mass amounts of data.<\/p>\n<p>Next he talks about how flexible IO is vital in a device like the Digital Discovery, and how the device manages to achieve this flexibility due to some &#8220;clever input circuitry.&#8221; He then divulges what is, in his opinion, some of the most useful features of the Digital Discovery, the pattern generator and programmable power supply.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24506\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sneak2-1-600x320.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\" data-wp-pid=\"24506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sneak2-1-600x320.jpg 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Sneak2-1.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Above is a project peek from the author and his team for the Chip Hack event based around the historic EDSAC computer. They are using the logic analyzer to decode the output of a punched tape reader to drive the electronics required to interface to a FPGA.<\/p>\n<p>He wraps up the article with a quote on his final thoughts regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/digital-discovery-portable-logic-analyzer-and-digital-pattern-generator\/\">Digital Discovery.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While there are many cheaper logic analyzers out there, they are unlikely to come close to the functionality of the Digital Discovery. It has quickly become a key part of our toolkit sitting alongside the trusty oscilloscope to give us the best of both worlds.
