The method utilizes Secure Shell (SSH), \u00a0a secure network protocol for data communication, which is very useful for remote operation via command-line. Via SSH, you can quickly copy text or files across to your Pi&#8217;s command line instead of typing it all out. Another benefit of using SSH is that you can use your Raspberry Pi\u00a0without a dedicated display (also known as \u201cheadless\u201d) which allows you to leave the device set-up in a particular configuration without the worry of anyone disrupting things.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18317 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/raspbian-logo-600x507.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/raspbian-logo-600x507.png 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/raspbian-logo-768x648.png 768w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/raspbian-logo.png 777w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This guide will be completed on Raspian, which is the official and recommended Raspberry Pi Operating System available on the NOOBS distribution from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\">Raspberry Pi Foundation<\/a>. On Windows, you will need to download an SSH client. The most commonly used one is called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/download.html\">PuTTY<\/a>, you can look for putty.exe under the heading for Windows on Intel x86.<\/p>\n<h2>1. ADD YOUR RASPBERRY PI AS A HOST<\/h2>\n<p>PuTTY doesn&#8217;t have an installer package, it&#8217;s just a stand-alone .exe\u00a0file. When you run it you&#8217;ll see the configuration screen below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18310 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ssh-win-config.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"448\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type the IP address of the Pi into the Host Name field and click the Open button.\u00a0If you don&#8217;t know the IP address, just type hostname -l in the Raspberry Pi command line. There are more ways to find your IP address\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/documentation\/remote-access\/ip-address.md\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>2. CONNECT<\/h2>\n<p>When the connection works you&#8217;ll see the security warning shown below; you can safely ignore it and click the Yes button. You&#8217;ll only see this warning the first time when PuTTY connects to a Pi that it has never seen before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18309 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ssh-win-warning.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll now have the usual login prompt. Log in with the same username and password you would use on the Pi itself. The default login for Raspbian is pi with the password raspberry.
