I have a sweet tooth so the idea of strangers giving me candy just for dressing up like a superhero blew my mind. Unfortunately, when I got into high school, trick-or-treating became\u00a0less socially acceptable and costumes became more about looking good and less about feeling like a crime fighting billionaire.\u00a0That&#8217;s when Halloween became about one thing and one thing only&#8230; pranks! Every year I would spend the week before Halloween devising a plan to scare my friends and family. After a few Halloween pranks that were deemed as &#8220;too far&#8221;, my friends started to avoided me on Halloween and I decided it was time to give it a rest. But when my boss approached me a few weeks ago about setting up a Halloween prank I just couldn&#8217;t resist.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17496\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17496 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Miranda_GIF_Final.gif\" alt=\"miranda_gif_final\" width=\"420\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catwoman was scared enough to reach for her gun&#x1f602;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I set my prank up in our break room. I used copper tape to create a circuit on the inside of the refrigerator door, when the fridge is opened the circuit is broken and a loud scream comes from a wireless speaker hidden on top of the fridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17398 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8491-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"img_8491\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8491-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8491-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8491-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8491-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/labview-physical-computing-kit-for-beaglebone-black\/\">BeagleBone Black<\/a> on top of the fridge is running a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/A-Great-Halloween-Prank-Using-a-BeagleBone-Black-a\/\">LabVIEW VI<\/a> that communicates over WiFi with a VI running on my computer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-17454 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"img_8463\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_8463-1-1200x900-cropped.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the fridge door is opened the <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/labview-physical-computing-kit-for-beaglebone-black\/\">BeagleBone Black&#8217;s<\/a> VI (front panel shown on the left below) sends a signal to a VI running on the computer (front panel shown on the right below) which then plays a sounds from a WAV file. Then I set up 2 cameras, one inside the fridge and the other to the left of the fridge. I ended up pranking 7 people overall, and while some people jumped in horror, others barely reacted.
