It involves using simple analog amplifiers with\u00a0various different analog components like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Transistor-Basics-BJTs\/\">BJT transistors<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Op-amp-Basics\/\">op-amps<\/a>, and the like.<\/p>\n<p>The single stage BJT (Bi-polar Junction Transistor) amplifier circuit has been giving me some serious problems. I had it working the other day and thought I was finished with it, so I took it all apart and started on the dual stage amplifier. But then I decided to add some more information to the Instructable, which required re-building it so I could capture the waveform data on the <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/electronics-explorer-all-in-one-usb-oscilloscope-multimeter-workstation\/\">Electronics Explorer Board<\/a>. And now it isn&#8217;t performing like it was before. Sad face.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15278\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15278 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p2-600x374.jpg\" alt=\"4p2\" width=\"600\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p2-343x215.jpg 343w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The dirty, rotten culprit. Double sad face.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried everything I could think of to reproduce the earlier results to no avail. Not to imply that it isn&#8217;t working at all, it is&#8230; just not in the same way as before. This leads me to two different possible conclusions as to why. I either:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A)<\/strong> I didn&#8217;t re-build it correctly, or&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>B)<\/strong> I didn&#8217;t fully understand what was happening before and now I understand better.\u00a0Let&#8217;s analyze these options.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15277\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15277\" style=\"width: 451px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15277 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p1.png\" alt=\"4p1\" width=\"451\" height=\"526\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is about as simple as circuit diagrams get.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First, option <strong>A<\/strong> &#8211; As you can see, the schematic is relatively\u00a0simple, so I&#8217;m pretty sure that since I&#8217;ve quadruple checked everything, I re-built it just fine. That leaves us with&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Option <strong>B<\/strong> &#8211; I&#8217;m not perfect and definitely don&#8217;t know all that there is to know about how <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bipolar_junction_transistor\">BJT transistors work<\/a>. Which is both\u00a0frustrating and strangely comforting.<\/p>\n<p>After some digging and looking up circuits that I know work, I discovered that I was expecting too much out of my little BJT. It was having a hard time driving the speaker by itself, so by adding a small audio transformer in between, I was able to convert some of the voltage coming from the BJT into current to drive the speaker diaphragm. Here is the new schematic:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15742\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p1-1-600x489.png\" alt=\"4p1\" width=\"600\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p1-1.png 600w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/4p1-1-168x137.png 168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite the momentary frustration, in the end all of this means that I have more to grow and develop as a maker, hobbyist, student, and professional. I was also able to finally finish my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/Simple-Analog-Amplifiers\/\">Simple Analog Amplifiers<\/a> Instructable!<\/p>\n<p>Beyond learning more about BJTs, by going through the frustration of failure I have\u00a0come out ahead. I don&#8217;t believe I failed at all, but I did learn.
