Not only that, but they make everyday things like phones and robots actually possible. I guess maybe robots aren&#8217;t everyday things for many\u00a0people, but you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>This little tool may take a minute to get the hang of, but it is invaluable when working with electronics.\u00a0I had never used a <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/solderless-breadboard-kit-large\/\">breadboard <\/a>until I started working here at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/\">Digilent<\/a>. I was handed one on my first day and my first thought was \u201cwhere do I put the wires\u2026?\u201d &#8230; &#8220;what\u2026what is this?\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15106 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/robot-hardees-carls-jr-600x335.jpg\" alt=\"robot-hardees-carls-jr\" width=\"424\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p><cite>(I felt like a robot trying to eat food. source:\u00a0http:\/\/cdn.foodbeast.com.s3.amazonaws.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/robot-hardees-carls-jr.jpg)<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>Well fear not newbies! We\u2019re\u00a0going to summarize the main information about getting started with breadboard. To start, most <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/solderless-breadboard-kit-large\/\">breadboards <\/a>are labeled pretty similarly. The rows are numbered and the columns should be labeled with letters.<\/p>\n<p>The rows are linked together by little metal clips. These allow for jumper wires and components (resistor, etc.) to be easily connected, but keeps them from easily falling out.<\/p>\n<p>Along the sides there should be columns marked blue (-) and red (+). Blue represents the ground bus and red is the high voltage bus. If you supply power to any spot on the red side of the column, every hole in the column now has voltage. Similarly, if you do this with ground, the entire column will be what we call a &#8220;bus&#8221; (i.e. all the holes in the column are ground).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Capture.png\" alt=\"capture\" width=\"512\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are great for spreading voltage. Jumper wires help transfer\u00a0voltage or ground to any place else on the board. Connect a jumper from the high voltage bus on the edge to a single hole anywhere else on the board and voila! Solder boards are boards you have to solder components onto (per the name). These are most of your standard circuit boards, and if you flip one over you&#8217;ll notice that all of the connections are soldered to the board itself. Solder-less breadboards are the one&#8217;s we&#8217;ve been focusing on. They make it easy to add or take off components as needed, and make circuit trial-and-error a lot easier. Both types of boards can be large, small&#8230; really any size.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16607\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o\" width=\"325\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o-800x1067.jpg 800w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14303851_10208889040296126_1504224649_o.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16606 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o\" width=\"322\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o-800x1067.jpg 800w, https:\/\/digilent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/14274511_10208889040696136_1011026733_o.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 322px) 100vw, 322px\" \/><br \/>\nThe components that work with a breadboard are plentiful too! <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resistor\">Resistors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potentiometer\">potentiometers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capacitor\">capacitors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inductor\">inductors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diode\">diodes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-emitting_diode\">LEDs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transistor\">transistors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MOSFET\">MOSFETs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermistor\">thermistors<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photoresistor\">photocell<\/a>, buzzers, push buttons, and a whole lot more.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, your circuit just doesn&#8217;t work and you are forced to ask yourself and possibly anyone in the near vicinity\u00a0&#8211; what the heck is happening? Troubleshooting can be an arduous process sometimes, but knowing some common mistakes might make it easier. If your <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-emitting_diode\">LED <\/a>isn&#8217;t lighting up or your <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/gws-servo-s03txf-std\/\">servo <\/a>is sitting like a ton of bricks, make sure your connections are hooked into the right row. The <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/solderless-breadboard-kit-large\/\">breadboard <\/a>has numbered rows for a reason, and it&#8217;s a super helpful way to make troubleshooting go a lot smoother. Make sure your jumper wires and all your connections are pushed in all the way &#8211; this is especially important if you&#8217;re using a solderless breadboard, and sometimes it can be harder to tell.<\/p>\n<p>Pay attention to directions as well. If you have two leads touching each other on your board, you may have a short circuit. In this case, there is almost no resistance and voltage is essentially free to flow. This can cause overheating, fires, and explosions. This acts a great tool when continuity, DC voltages, currents, resistance need to be checked. Additionally the <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/analog-discovery-2-100msps-usb-oscilloscope-logic-analyzer-and-variable-power-supply\/\">Analog Discovery 2<\/a> acts as a great way to analyze circuits, especially with the Logic Analyzer in <a href=\"https:\/\/digilent.com\/shop\/waveforms-2015-download-only\/\">WaveForms <\/a>2015.
